Pawhuska Facts

1) Gateway to the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve
17 miles from Pawhuska’s historic downtown, the preserve has 37,000 acres of the only protected ecosystem of its type in the world. More than 1,800 bison roam freely on the plains


2) Home of the very first Boy Scout Troop in America.
The first Boy Scout Troop monument is situated in from of the Osage County Historical Museum on Lynn Avenue. The troop was organized by Episcopal priest John F. Mitchell in May 1909.


3) Osage Tribe
The Osages first settled in this area in 1872. There were 2,229 original Osage allottees. Through theis mineral royalties, the Osages in the 1920’s were among the richest people per capita in the world. Today, at the agency, are located the Tribal Council Chambers, the Superintendent’s Home and the Osage Tribal Museum, which is the oldest continually operated tribal museum in the U.S..


4) Immaculate Conception Catholic Church
Widely known as the Cathedral of the Osage. Built in 1915 -- features 22 stained glass windows with the most remarkable ones crafted in Munich, Germany. These windows area must-see and have been described as some of the best American and foreign stained-glass in the United States.


5) Constantine Theater
Originally built as the Pawhuska House in the 1880’s, this beautifully restored theater takes you back in time to days of yore.
