History of the Blacksmith House *Built in 1872-first house built in Pawhuska by the Osage Tribe. *When Osages moved from their Kansas reservation, they brought along their Blacksmith, a Swiss by the name of Delarue. *An enticement for Mr. Delarue to come to this undeveloped territory was the promise of a new house. His importance to the tribe was reaffirmed when the Osages completed his house before the Agent's house, normally was the first structure built. *Listed on National Register of Historic Places. *5-Room 2-Story vernacular style sandstone blocks typical of an early settler's home. *Native lumber flooring, ceiling gas lights & a one-story room at the back of the house *A chimney at the end of the house serves as a fireplace. *Did sustain fire damage in 1973 *The First National Bank purchased the Blacksmith's House from Virgie Stuart in 1976 and donated it to the Pawhuska Community Foundation. |
